and even a church. At least eight
people died in the weeklong
rampage in 1928, including two
white mob members.
Now, more than 70 year
later, Florida's Legislature may
soon decide whether to pay $7
million in reparations, and
thereby become, scholars say,
h fll'8t state to compensate vic

LANSING _. African Ameri
cans are in a constant struggle
to accomplish their "maximum,
genetic and constitutional po
tential," said a renowned Afri
can American author and
third-generation medical doctor.
To an audience filled with more
than 200 Michigan State Uni
versity students still upset with
an alleged racial incident that
occurred two weeks ago, Dr.
Frances Cress Welsing dis
cus ed "Racism and Mental
Health."
Welsing, author of "The Isis
Papers" - a collection of essays
dealing with the psychological
reasons behind racism, said so
ciety can no longer ignore how
racism plagues their everyday
lives. "It is the most critical topic
that anyone can talk about in
this world today," Welsing said.
"And it' a topic that makes peo
ple more uncomfortable than
any other thing that people can
talk about."
Welsing mentioned the five
Black MSU students who were
attacked by five whites, alleg
edly for racist r ons, Charges
were pr ed against three of
the five white men involved, but
officials claim no proof of a ra
cially motivated attack. Racism
is nothing more than the concept
of white upremacy, Welsing
said. And to overcome that ide-
o
ology, African Americans must
become more serious about their
roles as activ members of soci-
ety.
Welsing attacked African
