the violence
Forty-sixpercent ofall chil
dren in the city of Detroit Ii in
poverty. This i the high t
youth poverty rate for any city in
the country.
The leading cause of death
of youth over 1 year of age is
violence, both accidental and in
tentional.
Gunfire is the leading cause
of death for African American
, males between the ages of 15 and
19 in the United States.
Of the largest 79 metropoli
tan areas in the country, Wayn
County had the third highest
county rate of firearm homicides
of African American males 16 to
19 years old for the years 1987 '
through 1989 .
• In Detroit, 72.6 of all 1990
youth deaths were violent
deat jof these violent deaths,
two-thirds(1 S 1) were in the
'homicide and I gal intervention'
category; which includes acci
dental deaths resulting from po
lice action .
• The National Adolescent
Student Health Survey esti
mates that, based on a 1987
study, 338,000 students nation
wide carried a handgun to school
at least once during that year,
and a third of those did so every
day. Many say they are arming
themselves for their own protec
tion.
In Detroit, the proportion of
new juvenile offenders, as con
trasted with repeat offenders,
grew from 38 percent in 1975 to
61 percent in 1990.
• The four crimes with the
highest number of youth arrests
in Detroit in 1990 were narcotics
sale, weapons possession, pos
session of a stolen vehicle, and
assault. The single largest cate
gory was possession of a stolen
vehicle.
