EWYORK (AP) - The trialby
fire for Mayor Rudolph Giuliani
and his new police commissioner
began with a mysterious 911
call.
The anonymous male call r
calmly told an operator that two
gunmen were "sticking up" a
Harlem mosque, ending the two
minute conversation with
"Happy New Year."
The call was a fake. And the
result is making the New Year
uncomfortable for Giuliani and
Police Commissioner William
Bratton.
After ponded Sun-
. day afternoon, a bra wl erupted
at the Nation of Islam mosque
that left eight officers injured
and worshipers outraged. Two
days later, police officers re
sponding to another call about a
man with a gun shot and killed
the unarmed son of a prominent
Muslim cleric in a Brooklyn
apartment building.
ON THE SURFACE, the
two incidents were not extraor
dinary in a city where police and
residents often clash.
But the confluence of violent
episodes involving Black Mus-
lims, the cases' foggy circum
stances and - especially - the
fact that they come as a new
white mayor takes office have
created a climate for crisis. '
Nation of Islam leaders and
Black activists, already leery of

A private meeting between
Bratton and Muslim leaders -
scheduled in part to arrange the
questioning of a suspect in the
melee - was canceled by the
commissioner when the leaders
showed up with uninvited Black
activists, including the Rev. Al
Sharpton,
the Republican mayor el cted on
a law-and-order platform, say
the incidents are an assault on
the Black community. Police of
ficers, they claim, unjustly
stormed a hous of worship with
their guns drawn, then killed a
mild-mannered teen-ager.
Dogged all w k by the con
troversy, Giuliani and Bratton
have defend d police actions and
dismissed harg that Black
Muslims ar under siege.
At a news conference Thurs
day, Giuliani said demands by
the Nation of Islam leaders that
the city apologize for the mosque
incident are "not a reaction to
reality."
"The only victims so far are
the police officers who were
beaten up," the' mayor said,
Bratton told reporters he felt
sympathy for the family of the
victim of the Brooklyn shooting,
but believed the officers' actions
were justified. He also argued
that the real culprit in the
mosque episode was the 911
caller. .
The "terrible irony," he said,
is that "the police and the Nation
of Islam are at odds with each
other through the actions of an
individual whose motives we
don't know at all."
There was little indication
Thursday the uproar would sub-
SHARPTON CALLED the
cancellation "an affront to the
Black community."
Meanwhile, lingering ques
tions about both cases remained
unanswered.
By the time a child is six years old,
experts can tell if he's at risk to drop out of
high school. They can predict who will have
a hard trne keeping a job. And even who is
more likely to end up on welfare. Thirteen
million American children live below the
poverty line. And they need help before the
age of six to improve their chances in life.
Earty intevention programs are crucial.
And they do work. Programs like Success
by Six have proven that a poor child who
receives help ear1y on can hope for a much
brighter Mure.
But these programs need help
.. from people like you. People to answer the
phone, do odd jobs, raise money or play
with a child. Whether you give an hour of
your time or a box of used toys, it can make
a wor1d of difference. Call 1-800-733-5400

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - Egypt's most popular Islamic preacher
visited the head of its Christian community Thursday in a
display of unity between the country's two main religions.
Sheik Metwaly el-Sharawy, known throughout the Muslim
world for his television programs interpreting the Koran, Is
lam's holy book, saw Coptic Pope Shenouda III at his office in
Cairo's St. Mark's cathedral.
Attacks over the past two years on the lives and property ,of
Egyptian Copts by members of radical Islamic groups have
ngered the country's largely moderate Islamic community.
Radicals killed nine Christians last, year. Government news
media generally dismissed the attacks as individual acts, but
they have coincided with a campaign of extremist violence
attempting to destabilize Egypt's largely secular government.
On Thursday, four gunmen shot dead three policemen ou
side a village station hous in southern Egypt and stole their
weapons. Since the campaign to topple the government started
two years ago, more than 280 people have been killed in clashes
b tween xtremists and police.
