They're determined to make some type of sacrifice for the betterment of themselves. The majority of these resolutions are blown away with the cold winds of January before they are even put into practice. This proves that the inten tions of the so-called 'resolutions' may only be based on th emo tions aroused from the eggnog and whiskey. For th who are abstinent, it may only be based on your belief. Joyce1y Elders, 'up' the can of worms again while rai ing the qu a possibility. . The legalization of drugs is, purely 'and simply, not the way to go. While there have been debates by doctors, law enforce ment and the judicial community, safety of both the mind and body; of our youth, and the future of America, is at stak . The basic belief that this would curb violence in the streets is not realistic. Keeping the cost down, or having a bidding war between gang leaders and/or drug kingpins, will create devas tating and violent retribution. And most importantly, however cheap and easy it is, the selling of drugs over the counter will still result in crime. Specifically; since Black America is shut out of fully partici pating at the economic table "of advancement and equality," will funding for customers be government subsidized? After all, "habits" have to be paid for by someone, and Black on Black crime will reach delirium, if it hasn't already. , IT DOES 'T TAKE a brain surgeon, or a Surgeon General, to figure out the potential moral and physical decay that would result from legalizing drugs in a society that often appears to be going to "hell in a hand basket", anyway. America can ill-afford the cost of more addicts, professional or otherwise. When we past the torch of leadership to our youth, who wants it to be dropped, by an " allegedly coherent" cocaine-sniff ing, needle-sticking, grass-smoking individual? Finally, and perhaps most importantly, we must assure our children that the hand passing that torch - in whatever part of society - is steady, strong and true. This is the year which marks one of the greatest feat known to Man - at least this might be believed by the NAACP's enemies and critics. The group has survived 85 years as the premier civil rights organization in America. Despite that fact, the mainstream media has hired only a few so-called Blackjournalists, to help sensitize its readership and "get the stop". Unfortunately, many of them still do not "get the story". In a world of pins and disinformation, .th two forces have in many cases - not all - mislead, lied, rumored, and even tried to literally crush the organization. But, the towering conviction of the NAACP's founding par ent ha insulated its contemporary leadership. Corporate America realizes that their definition of "fair hare" to the Black community has traditionally n peanut. Additionally, many Blacks who have achieved, forget about reaching back for . others. So, the need for an economically healthy Black America demands refocusing, strong and consistent leadership, and the ability to reachout and change the growing deprivation from multiracial and multicultural achievement. Under th current leadership of Dr. William F. Gibson, th NAACP and i board have cemen what appears to be an excellent partnership with Dr. Benj minF Chavi ,Jr., th new executive director/ceo, and the youth of America.
