J 1, By RO SEIGEL By PATRICIA COLBERT Sp!cIM to the Michigan Citizen DETROIT - While state poli ticians debate th qu tion offu ture chool financing, H len Moor , a nativ of T nn and founder of Black P r nts for Quality Education, a mov ment of paren dedicated to finding solutions to probl ms within the schools, has been working to change the negative impact of the Detroit Public schools on Af rican American children. Moore, a graduate of Wayne' State University, earned a Ju rist Doctorate D gr at Detroit College of Law. A resident of D troit for 52 years, Moor ha spent more than a decade' I ruggling to pro mote quality education for in ner-city youth. Among her v ral aw rds, the most pr tigious is the Con cur nt Resolution from th Stat Of Michigan xt nding the 'highest prais , admiration and respect for contributions she's made to th community. THE RE OG ITIO DID not come easy. After holding down a full time job and caring for a family, he till found time to attend rallies, town meetings and community forums. She also spent countless hours working with leaders and community groups. In a recent interview, Moor expressed some of her views and opinion on D troit's educa tional system. What are the most seriou problems facing the Detroit Public schools? "We are looking at the demi of public ducation as we know it today. It's not just happening 'here, but all across the country. There has been a design to de stroy our schools and the minds of our children. Right now we are having school financer form that i connec d to chool r - form. Those two i su go together as far ,s th governor is con cerned. Mila Ion will not give us the kind of money w need. Besid s that, th 1 w will change next y ar as r ult of property t x cu . The Gov rnor, legislator nd the publi schools have finance plan. If these plan are not impl - mented and finaliz dour schools will b los. Not only will it affect Detroi , but schools Statewid .It "Charter d Support Our Advertisers tain amount of money for each child just we ge in public hool . They will be absorbed into he public school system but th y will run their schools the w y th y have in the pas but they will work according to our rul . Then, Chartered Schools within the public school arena ar given full control to run their chool the way they s fit." What ar schools of choice? "CHOOL OF CHOICE offer educational programs of a particular expertise. An exam ple of that would be school (A) is noted for an ou tanding mathe matics program while chool (B) is noted for outstanding arts." The general consensu is that busing a family of five to various locations of the city to attend choice school is def ting the purpo e. What do you think? "We have never been for bu - ing. Even wh n integra ion came about. We were on of the groups that stood up to th d - segregation plan. We id bu - ing our children to the subur would only cau "White Flight" (Persons of European d nt va cating the inner-city in large numbers). As it turned out they went ahead without making preparations and as a result, busing as it is today, is a night- ma ." What can th D troit Public School System look forward to under the new administration? eNotmu h. 00 all of th candidates. If ware erious about our children we should not select someone who has been forced down our throats through political mans. We have too many rious is sues. We need someone who will stand by us to the end. " In summation, Moore ys if parents do not began to make an effort to save the children, then people within the system, will have to come forward and an swer the call. yana hinholster ompletes ba ic training Navy Seaman Recruit Ayana R.
