Since its tart in 1987, the Community Health Care Pro­ gram has awarded more than 1.75 million in grants to 89 non­ profit organizations. Each recipi­ ent organization applies grant money toward the development of innovative health care programs and activiti designed to en­ hance oommunity-based health services. Last year 13 centers nation­ wide received initial and second year Community Health Care grants totalling $340,000. The Community Health Care Crystal Award, a recognized sym­ bol of excellence among eommu­ nity health leaders, is presented each year to programs that are judged to hold exceptional prom- Blac gainst Drun D iving begin holiday campaign DETROIT - Blacks Against Drunk Driving (BADD) in metro­ politan Detroit began its annual holiday campaign last week This is the third year that the Michi­ gan Black Alcoholics and Addic­ tions Council (MBAAC) has sponsored the campaign that was created to elevate the awaren of the problems associated with driving while under the influence. The campaign will include press releasee, print promotions, radio and television PSAs. "The cam­ paign theme will 'B A Real Friend," stated Deborah Fair, MBAAC p ident. MBAAC' goal is to continu to work to comba the I of lit; and the serious injuries caused y drunk driving tin the metropoli­ tan Detroit area. Studies indicate that African Americans are at greater risk of accidents due to drinking in urban areas. Other campaign activities include speakers and programs in Detroit schools and a dinner reception "One BADD Night," a non-alec­ holic celebration. The evening-in­ cludes entertainment and the annual mix-off, a contest between celebrities trying out their own favorite non-alcoholic drink reci­ pes. The Happy Players, a Detroit youth group, will perform in churches and schools with anti­ drug and -drinking messages. The BADD campaign targets the 17 to 24 year-old male driver who is meet vulnerable, according to current statistics. However, there will also be an effort to reach the general 17 to 55 year-old Afri­ can American audience. ....:.
