A1 ELDER GORDO AND his church, Spiritual Israel Temple, met for many y at the Liberty Hall of the U.N.IA on th corner of Warren and St. Aubin In 1987, Elder Gordon and his church "made a generous financial eontri­ hution to Division 407 to help ve the building. Elder Gordon has hawn that he' a true Garveyite and "he ain't tired yet. " Next on the list i Garveyite Captain Leroy Jackson. When Commissioner Williams of Toronto, Canada came to Detroit in 1919 to organize a Division of the Universal Negro Improve­ ment Association and African Communities League, Bro. Leroy Jackson was the 13th one it) line for membership. Bro. Jackson immediately be­ came a member of the Universal African Legions and earned the rank of Captain He was trained by retired United States Cavalry­ man Tazzie Grant, nicknamed "Frisco." Whenever the Honor­ able Marcus Garvey came to De­ troit it as Captain Jackson's d ty to protect him. While his membership was in Division 125 in Detroit, he was elected President and was choeen to be an Alternate Delegate to the International Convention of the U.N.lA & AC.L in Liberia, Af­ rica in 1954. During the reconstruction of the organization, Division 125 was changed over to Division 407. He became Chairman of the 'l'ru&­ tee Board and Chaplain of the Division He still holds these two offices today. BRO. JACKSON HAS worked for 74 years in the strug­ gle for unity among the Diaspora and the redemption of the Moth­ erland, Africa. Captain Leroy Jackson is 93 years old now and continues to meet every week be­ cause "he ain't tired yet. " Last but not least, Garveyite Major Arthur Thomas whojoined the Universal Negro Improve­ ment Association and African Communities League in 1921 when Libery Hall was at 1516 Russell. When Liberty Hall moved to the comer of Warren and St. Aubin, it was the exper­ tise of Bro. Thomas in the plumb­ ing and electrical trades and hard work of all in other trades that kept the building in goodrepeir. Bro. Thomas owned tack in the Black Star Line. Bro. Thomas rose to rank of Major in the Universal African Legions. He trained under the command of retired United States Cavalryman Tazzie Grant. Major Thomas and the Honorable Elijah Muhammad were both Legion­ aires before the Honorable Elijah Muhammad .organized the Na­ tion of Islam. Major Thomas drilled his soldiers in the school yard of the Bosto Elementary School. Major Arthur Thomas became p ident of Detroit Division 407 in 1979 and served for twelve (12) years. Because of ill health he re­ signed in 1991. Major Thomas continues to tay abreas of all U.N.IA & AC.L. activities be­ cause "he ain't tired yet.
