As the old saYing goes, "Ladies
First," 80 let's begin with Garvey­
ite Sis. Ruth Smith. She was a
very young girl in 1920 when she
joined the Juvenile Department
of the Universal Negro Improve­
ment Association and African
Communiti League. Her whole
life centered around U.N.IA &
A.C.L. activities that involved
rna meetings of Blacks, pa­
rades, picni es, boat rid , and
running excursions.
Eventually, she married an­
other Garveyite, Bro. Joseph
Craigen.
When Sis. Ruth joined the
Women's Motor Corps, she met
Madame DeMena in Chicago who
was the International Organizer
of the U.N.I.A. & AC.L

Robert Paige, a former Chicago resident, was
an interior design r for the architectural firm
Skidmore, Owings and Merrills, when he started
designing scarves and dress fabric for an Italian
manufacturer in Milan, exploring" geometric pat­
terns and shapes of all types."
That exploration has blossomed into vision in
Detroit. '
Paige has a 10ft at 2679 East Grand Blvd., a
fonner industrial space which has been trans­
fonned into an airy, colorful design studio. The
front of th loft has a c ic vanity painted in
yellow and orange geometric shapes, with a bench
in matching fabric.
