Dr. Cain explained that recognition would go to (1) a tu­ dent, staff member, parent, or community person who is "work­ ing with us to make our schools the beet in the nation"; (2) a person who is going "beyond the call of duty", or (8) tudent , achiever. Two Cortland Early Childhood Center parents were the first honorees, saluted at the Oct. 11 school board meeting. Sharon McClendon, introduced .by Assistant Principal Bar­ bara Buckins, was honored for her constant assistance at Cortland. A 1981 mGHLAND Park High School graduate, the honoree had been praised by teachers for diligent and depend­ able work, said Buckins, who called McClendon a "highly motivated parent volunteer" who was "doing a great job in making a community of learners." . Fred Banford, introduced by Early Childhood Center Super­ visor Ingeborg Taylor-Hill, was honored for for 862 hours as a Head Start volunteer inJ. 992-93, and 475 hours logged already in this school year. Taylor-Hill noted that Banford's involvement ranged from assisting in the kitchen to helping children with manipulatives (educational playthings which children handle, to learn sizes, shapes, numbers,' etc.).
