The Detroit NAACP in ooop
eration with Omni Bank, First
Independence National Bank of
Detroit, and African-American
Busin and Community Or
ganizations, will host an historic
African-American Eoonomic De
velo ment Summit, Saturday,
,,r 23 at the Omni Interna
tional Hotel in downtown Detroit.
Participants will have the op
'portunity to strategize in small
groups to plan specific actions in
the area of entrepreneurship, 00-
operative economies, how to ac
cess financial resources, and
youth entrepreneurial develop-
ment.
The registration fee of $30 in
cludes continental breakfast,
luncheon and strategy ion
materials.
According to Reverend Wen
dell Anthony, President of the De
troit NAACP, the day-long
program will help develop an on
going agenda for economic em
powerment for African
Americans in Detroit.
"NOTHING IS MORE im
portant than unifying and organ
izing the African American
Community toward a new era of
self-detennined economic power,
- we 'must own, not just con
sume," says Rev. Anthony. "The
economic summit will help trans
form African American economic
clout from wasted opportunity, to
wealth, ownership and power."
The goal of this historic confer
enoe is to develop an economic
development agenda which can
be implanted at the grassroots
level, and that can serve as a
model for African American Em
nomic Revitalization across the
rountry.
"This event will turn consum
e1'8 into owners, apathy into 001-
lective empowerment, and
individual achievements into M
rican-oentered oommunity pro
gress," says Joann Watson,
NAACP Executive Director.
"This current effort also oomple
menta existing NAACP Eoonomic
programs, including: "Buy De
troit, Operation Fair Share, and a
Fair Banking Alliance", she adds.
According to Wayne County,
Commissioner Ricardo Solomon,
Chairman of the effort, this Sum
mit, is vital because there were
more African American owned
businesses in Detroit in 1892
than there are today.
"IT IS MY hope that this con
ference, will timulate more Afri
can American entrepreneurs, a
greater spirit of oooperative eco-
nomies among our busin ,"
id Commissioner Solomon.
Summit co-sponsors include:
Booker T. Washington BUsin

Busin velopm nt Council,
