Izmery, considered one of the most promi
nent and vocal supporters of President Aristide
and the pro-democracy movement, was also con
sidered a giant in the private sector. His
brother, George Izmery, was assassinated by
armed civilians who opened fire on him in May,
1992, while he was leaving his office.
It is reported that Jean Francois Elyse , a
vocal supporter of the military regime, was
identified as the alleged assassinator of Izmery.
The body ofIzmery, who was dragged from the
church and shot several times, laid outside for
two hours.
In radio broadcasts after the incident, Serge
Beaulieu, a spokesperson for the military dur
ing the Governor's Island negotiations, called
for the assassination of members of the Govern
ment and supporters of democracy.
