every five children under 18-live.
in poverty and face the danger of
hunger.
Around the wo kl, 0,000 chil
dren die from hunger related
causes every day, BFW notes.
The organization expressed
particular concern about Africa,
where largely because of a
drought, 42 million people face
starvation in the months ahead.
Bread for the World (BFW), a
Christian organization con rned
with hunger, has drafted two
pieces of legislation dealing with
h rrint U.S.andtheAfrican
oontinent. . ..
p Is wouid use
the resources which have gone to
military spending during the Cold
War "to feed hungry children."
BFW is calling on citizens to
write or telephone their U.S. con
gressional representatives and
senators in support of:
• The "Every Fifth Child Bill",
which would enable the Women's,
Infants, and Children (WIC) up
plemental food program. (BFW
states that only 55% of eligible
women and children can benefit
because of inadequate funding ..
For every dollar not spent on eligi- .
ble pregnant women, it costs four
dollars in medical treatm nt for
her underweight baby.
• The "Many Neighbors, One
Earth" bill calls for "top-t.o-bottom
refonn of foreign aid. " BFW states
that half of our foreign aid is mili
tary and security assistance "for a
handful of countries," but the bill
would provide for "long-term
peaceful development for the
world's poorest people."
