Being a former tournament .
ti herman Bob knows his fish
from both id of the counter.
After joining the Detroit B
Club in 1987 - established by
African-Americans denied ac-
to Jim Crowflshingcluba-c
Bob was awarded by Michigan
Outdoor' Fred Trost for catch
ing an 8.1 pound big-mouthed
the following year. Purport
edly the third _largest big
mouthed male caught that year.
Though not bitter, Bob -and
th official tallies - w it dif
ferently. "The record shows it
was the biggest, (b ) caught
that year, and I hould've gotten'
t\"ltw ly of
t . ," he continued, pointing to
the dark kin of his hand.
Marshall's religious convic
tions were tested when Bassin'
Bob's kicked ofT in 1990. With a
deep breath, one morning he ap
proached a senior home on
Greenfield and Seven Mile
about his service, but they
anted references. Having
none, Bob kept plugging. One
center, then another. Later that
day he hit paydirt; a senior home
where, Bob says, "the woman
not only said 'yes,' but she gave .
me a list of other buildings
nearby that would be interested
(as well). I didn't even make it
back to that first (home) for two
weeks."
I GUESS YOU could say Bob
wears his feelings on his sleeves.
The front of Bassin Bob's motor
home sized, custom cargo van
reads "we got in goin' on" in
bright purple letters; and on the
back, "praise the lord." This ad
vertising approach was not ex
actly encouraged by friends and
busin associates.
"A lot of people said, 'no, no,
no, you might offend some peo
ple', but that would not be me if
I didn't say that," he says. Mar-
hall shuns separating himself
from his beliefs just to earn a
buck. He believ that if he can
make his share of the money
he' happy. "I'm not greedy,
says Marshall.
Bob's Logo is two fish and a
basket of bread. He explains, "In
the bible J us said he would
feed the I raelites with two fish
. and five loaves of bread, and he
did'. 0 I figured that that would
be my motto .. .I always strive to
put the lord before-me."
Inside th truck there are
wall to wall freezers and refrig
erators containing such delica
cies as pacific king crab legs,
10 ter tails, farm raised-catfiah
fillets, salmon steaks, big plastic
bags of perch, and of course lots
of . In addition there are
rows of bread, creole seasonings,
batter and b ding packs, and
bottl of hot uce. Jamaican
Hell Fire, and Franks are the
ho lle.
