LOuis since the new city hall was built 15 years ago, is of no use at this point. I DO WONDER does GOO ge angry, and with all the immoral ity going on in America now, the tragedies must show that God is displeased. WHAT I W was muddy waters covering the boardwalk to the Casino Queen, and water up to its landing porch. Then across the river on the St. Louis side t the Big Board, waiting for its crowd of gamblers and en tertainers, but the Mighty Mis s' ippi was , and filled the p age and some inside the boat. Regald B. Riddle, reporter for the East St. Louis Monitor wrote duing the opening day for the Casino ueen, "I t's b n de scribed as an old time roman of the river with red and gold car pets, Victorian draperi with els, four floors of wedding cake, white balcony, sp rkling chandeliers and a gorgeou facil ity. I am not talking down East St. Louis, but what I am aying is th re should be som other way that the great horeline of the Missis ippi hould be used to bring in jo and improve economic condi tions From Lou' 0 th onomy luck on h We cannot find decent pic tures to watch on television, un- . .less it's killing, open sex and vulgarity. Let' hope that the case is not that God is angry, but to mil and miles of water, spread out from the Mississippi River as we crossed the Jefferson Bar racks Bridge, some 2 miles south of St. Louis, we believe that God is not pleased about something. Talked with my nephew y - terday, George Smith Jr. in Fort . Madison, Iowa, to check on the family. He said, "Aunt, water is everywhere, When 1 asked if the train station where I embarked whim going there to attend an other nephew's-funeral, was un der water, he said, "there and beyond". I am praying, and also send ing a check to the American Red C to help in a very small way. I am asking you to do the sam thing. Chri tian Women Con cerned is sending a check also. By ROBBIE CRUMP-McCOY S".c'-I to tM Mlchlg.n Citizen EAST T. LOUI , Ilr-Fifty three Y' rs ago I stepped off a Gulf-Mobile-Ohio passenger train on fourth and Broadway in downtown East St. Louis, near the bank of the Mighty Missis sippi River. It was a beautiful day and my second tri to that Southern Illi nois city, ich I grew to love, before movmg on to Detroit 42 years ago. Since that time I've been to East St. Louis many, many times. My mother, the late Rosie Lee Smith, a school teacher for 41 years, was con fined to the Nursing Home there for 18 months, and I went there 15 times to visit her. Now I am making the trek often to check on my sister, Ma bel Smith Jon , who paid my tuition in college, and, the matri arch of the Smith-Thompson families. I returned from East St. Louis last Thursday, and had the un fortunate opportunity to stand near where I got off that train 53 years ago, with an unpleasant experience. . I watched that muddy water of the Mighty Mississippi as it twirled and roared downstream as if it were angry at the world. I began to wonder d God get angry? If so, perhaps that is why The Casino Queen, which was the talk of the town when it opened its doo three months ago, is emerged.
