The upholstered sofa t k on an
unfamili r 100 abo 182Q. The
trai ht back, leg d irnplicity of
the earlier herato style were
replaced by the cu ed and carved
featur of the Em Ire period. The
arms were curved and padded and
often curled over a small tubular pil­
low. The back was flat but the top rail
stopped partway and was carved
with flowers or fruit. The legs could
be winged paws or fish.
The best New York-made ex­
amples were painted and decorated
Wi�h ld leaf. Other areas preferred
da carved mahogany. Few
re roductions have en made of the
carved Empire fa. The sofas are
usually uncomfortable with hard
seats and carvings that can poke from
the back. The attractive arms are use­
ful if you half- recline on the sofa. A
ood antique mahogany fa of this
style is still a bargain in the shops for
less than $3,500.
