Som one in the Detroit Public S hoot has a lot to answ r for
following the incident this p t week involving three cop entering a
classroom, causing a minor riot.
Instead of being ou id protecting kids corning and going to
school, th e three cops went to a middle school, had the principal and
teachers select tho e kids that fit their definition of ang-bangers and
then herded those elect few into a classroom where all hell broke
100 .
Our reports differ from 1 hose of the major media. Th daily papers
aid one kid urinated on t wall and aoother mooned the officers. OUf
sources say the uproar tarted when a cop lapped a mart-talking
youngster, then slapped another kid who admonished the poli offi-
cer for his behavior unneces ary.
It is highly unlikely a male child would urinate publically in the
midst 0 a threatening ituation: it i an inherently dangerous po ition.
or i mooning in the city ulture.
But the end result is tragic: th polk hauled 8 kids off to jail. And
their parents thought they were in chool getting an eaUlCation.

-Our kids need nurturing. Th old African proverb that "it takes a
whole village to n i e a child" was flagrantly violated by the Detroit
police with the as istance of the Detroit schools.
Our translation of the proverb tell us adults reach out to kids with
love, not guns am brut orce.
That means t hers hould be calling on' mothers and fathers,
pastors and c mmunity leaders to walk t e hallways and talk with kids
if there are problems.
Let's not pay lip ervice to hool empowerment while dialing911.
Call on the community. we know that' the answer.
