bum a kerosene lamp. Everyone was
in bed by 9:00 p.m. in order to get up
the next morning and start the process

Both can remember working all
day for little or no pay. Carrie says
there was nothing on the farm that he
couldn't do.
"It was 16 children in our family,
eight boys and eight girls. My mother
made all of our cloth . She would
take empty flour sacks.and soak them
in lye to remove the lettering. The
sa ks were then cut up and used to
make slips, dresses and pants.
"I picked and Chopped cotton,
cooked, cleaned, milked cow and fed
the chickens until I got grow n. Al
though my father owned more than 80
head of cattle an� a cotton gin, the boll
weevils came along and put us out of
busines ."
