She added there would be me

help each other ettle di put and
plaints of wrongful actions by some
officers, including two-of the defen
dants, the officers involved were not
recommended for special monitoring
or retraining, SOSAD aid.
o y tern of mandatory annual
training been tabli hed for po-
. lice officers. No structured support
plan w developed to evaluate at
regular intervals the fitness of pollee
officers for duty from a psychiatric
perspective." SOSAJ) said.
The organization al 0 charged
that the Detroit Police Department
"lagged behind other police depart
ments in the state and nation in "util
izing alternative mears to deadly
force."
SOSAD added that "for the fitst
time" Detroiters are talking bout,
how Black pohce officers "harass
and brutalize Blacks, and especially
Black.males, as freely as white police
officers."
"Clearly," the organization said,
"it is not enough just to change the
color of tbose with power over our
lives. The Police Department has to
be reformed."
SOSAD IS calling for:
-Electing rather than appointing
the Board of Police Commis loners
dealing with citizen complaints, so
that it is accountable to the citizens.
- Establishing a sy tern to moni
tor and evaluate the fitness of officers
for duty at regular intervals.
- Having police officers repeat
edly charged with wrongful conduct
by citizens "red-flagged" for special
monitoring and evaluation.
- Development of alternative
mears to deadly force in detaining
suspects or prisoners.
- Encourage peer support groups
for officers who are traumatized by
violence and homicide.
- Offer regular training in victim
. assi tance and critical accident de
briefing.
SO AD ADDED that killings
"j ust as destructive and sensel as
th murder of Malice Green" are per
petuated by Black civilians against
other Black civilians and called on
the community to "rally" against
these crimes with the same outrage
arid peed as we rallied against the
laying of Malice Green."
SOSAD official James Boggs
tated that in. faili ng to do that, Black
people ar aying "if a white person
or a person of another ethnic group
di respects or beats or kills an Afri
can American, we know what to do.
Within an hour, we're out there or
ganized to protest march, fight back.
But wh n an African American does
the arne thing .to another African
American, we're immobilized."
SOSAD also called for organizi ng
to "rebuild our communities." In
cluded in the community reform are
ideas u h as Narcotics Anonymous,
a support group to help wean n igh
bors and family members from ad
diction; transforming vacant lots into
community gardens and children's
parks where neighbors can work and
play together.
