Baynard mansion, built in the early 18 in what is now Sea Pines,
was never lost in a card game or torched by Union troops.
But the real story may be just
interesting, said Michael Trinkley,
an archaeologist with the Chicora
Foundation who's back bn Hilton
Head studying the ruins of the is
land's only tabby mansion.
This is the third season of work

another structure nearby.
Legend has it that William Bay
nard won tlantation from Capt.
John Stoney in an all-night poker
game. But Trinkley said records
show that the legend is untrue.
