PAL Hockey At Jack Adams By H rry M. And r on, Jr. Michigan Citizen (Second in a four part series) DETROIT- While the Detroit Hockey Association (DHA) is recruiting players and parents to join, parents whose children are current m mbers are lending a hand to their kids and other players who are in volved in the program. These parents not only believe in their kids 'and the OHA, but they're also encouraged about the game of hockey which was first believed unattainable to the black community. Barbara Wyatt of D troit, who e daughter Monica plays goalie for the Adray League Flyers, has seen the . progre of her daughter'S ability and would like to see' other parents and kids get involved. "It (The Jack Adams program) is a very good program," Wyatt said. "It's a program that the kids should reallt get into." "IT' A MYTH TO THINK black kids aren't intere tep in hockey because I know a lot of kids that would be interested in playing. Monica has been playing for six years' and has been encouraged by her friends who now have the desire to play." Eugene Owens, who's the manager for the Squirt Division ReQ Wings in the Jack Adams House League, has hi son Stefan playing. He explained that his son made progress in his skating with his sup port. "My got involved through the Police Athletic League when he was at the rink," Owens aid. "Because of his trong interest I brought him up here to ign up to play." "My on has been at it for five years. When he first signed up he didn't know how to kate, but he got into it and i enjoying it. He doe play other ports.but.a lot of kid on hi black aren't exposed to hockey." BOTH WY IT D Owens • believe that their parents don't have th money," Wyatt explained. "But th re are people out there that sponsor children. They'Il continue their road trip January 7th against Hillsdale opening up GUAC schedule for the new year. WSU returns home for three home games against GLlAC opponents Grand Valley State (Jan.9), Northern Michigan (Jan. 14) and Michigan Tech (Jan. 16) .. WSU's Irvin Marchano guards opponent in recent game. "Hockey is expensive for paren who don't know about the cost of . hockey," Owens explained. "If tb Y go out there and buy new equipment it's going to be expensive, but getting involved with the DHA and the players parents, they'll find out how . to purchase good used equipment and how possible it is to play." • "By buying used equipment you can save up to 60 to 70.percent off t b e price of new-equipment. I saved money by buying-equipment from .different people. But most black people don't even know that thi rink exists in Detroit Some don't even know that there's a hockey program here." . Both parents concluded though that the OHA is doing all it can to get more kids involved by hel ing parents buy used equipme and publiczing the program. HARRY ANDERSON JR.jMIohIgan catzen cker, sponsors her by buying· the equipment she needs to play.". There are place like Play It Again Sports and Sports Again where you can buy used equipment.
