eek Vie described a series of
fine defensive plays made by the
young French star, Jean-Marc.
Roudinesco, who held the West
hind. He led the ing of clubs,
'shifted to low spade, nd when
declarer won nd played th A-K-Q
of trumps, he discarded the queen of
diamonds!
Without this extraordinary dis
card, South would h ve made the
contract easily. He would h ve led
MEith r we hav to lower
price or go tople
diamonds twice toward dummy and
would have allowed West to hold the
trick whenever he played th queen.
But tbe'declarer was another
young French star, Jean-Paul Meyer.,
who realized why Roudinesco had
ditched the queen of diamonds. He
saw th t if he led diamond and
finessed the nine East would return a
spade and the contract would go
kerplunk .
So, to prevent this, Meyer em
barked on a line of play designed to
overcome Roudinesco's imaginative
defense. He cashed three more
rounds of trumps nd then led a
iamond to the king, producing this

Declarer next cashed the ace of
diamonds and West found himself in
a helpless position. If he discarded a
de. Meyer would lead a sped nd
score his tenth trick with dummy'
queen of clubs. And if West dis
carded a club - which is what he
actually did - d clarer would score'
his tenth trick by leading a club from
dummy and discarding diam nd.
Either way, South was ur to tri
umoh.
