A. The general cause for a spalding
condition is attributable to many fac­
tors, such as weather, unsatisfactori­
ly' poured concrete, structural
settlement and a host of others.
If you have 'decid d to r pair the
jobon your own, there are a few steps
you should follow. Of course, I
haven 't seen the problem, so I'll give
you some general advice. .
Since ,the problem is in the rear of
the house, the finished product
doesn't have to be mirror perfect.
Approach this chore as any other and
decide exactly what is needed for the
jo based on what I'm telling you.
Yo to construct a form made
up of Ill-inch to S/8-inch plywood
for starters. This is what will hold
your mixed cement in place when
you are ready' to pour it. Build the
form quite sturdily. because you °11
need the strength depending 'on how
much cern nt wi II be used. Once you
secur the form in po ition to the
comer of the house, you need to sup­
port the plywood with brae . The
braces can consist of 2x4 pieces of
wood directed at "an angle (about 4S
degrees). Nail the braces to the form
. itself and make sure you secure the
bottom of the 2x4's firmly in the
ground. You may want to also brace
the bottom of the 2x4 with a large
stone for extra security and to
prevent movement. -
If you leave sufficient room at the
top of the form where it me the
spalded area, that will be your area
to funnel the cement into. Proceed
with all toe cement necessary to fill
11 the spalded spaces between the
form and the comer of your house.
When the entire ar is filled with
cement, you will have to wait t least
three to five days to let the cement
dry befor removing the fonn.
Afler the waiting time is over, care-
� ove the 'form and examine
the treated area. If any minor touch­
up work is needed, do so with
mason' trowel or 1 rge putty knife.
Hopefully, the cement will have ad­
hered to the spalded area, and it w
