b Ho do un(! lin eli, try to way. Th religi people tell that we hould be h ppy bee our loved is with God now. I hope , but what about th in of our 1 ? Tom h been an incredibly impor tant person in rr.y life. He i-he - I h ve a h rd time switchin to the past tense - Tom w a nur turer of people and talent. He d a remarkable ability to encourage ar ti and writers to expr themsel ves, and discover their own creativity. Tom's gre test delight was to see one of his proteges be come a huge succ . He w proud of the fact that he was a high school dropout who edu cated himself. Tom edited and pub lished newspapers, won prestigious awards for his own columns, but his greatest tis! ction came from in spiring others to accomplish more than they ever knew they had in them. He washy. selfless man, a truly nice man. He had unlimited patience. His comments and criticism were 1- w ys presented in the kindest nd most positive way imagin ble. I miss you, Tom Pritchard. Dorothy, Tom's wife, calls him "bear." That nickname fits his size and his cuddle-ability. Seeing Tom with his cats on his lap - that big guy being tender and gentle - will be one of my fondest memories. He had a wonderful visit with his son in the day just before his death. Irs either fortuitous or the work of God, that Tom died with no un finished family problems. and no r guments or harsh words for nyone to regret. Does God do this for us, even if he won't do anything about our losing our loved ones? Dorothy is a poet. Here's one of her poems- I cried. I cried. Did you know that? For Just ODe imple re D. The loss of love. Which I till think is the hiahest form of treason. Last night, at the hospital, I thought about all the anxious people in wait ing rooms outside of surgery or in tensive care units. Some will breathe a sigh of relief, and others will go through what Tom's friends and relatives are feeling right now. It's a bond that unites us all. We all lose people we love. Even if it happens to everyone, it's awful and agonizing and sad. Even thoUgh Tom is with God now, I mi him terribly and the thought of never seeing that gentle bear again, or never hearing his soft spoken words, fills me with pain and my eyes with tears. My nine-year-old daughter just asked me how I'm doing. I told her that I'm feeling sad, but 1"11 be okay. She took hold of my hand and id, .. Anytime you need a hug, just ask me." That's it folks. That's what we can do when death comes to someone we love. There are no words for how we feel. We can give each other hugs. *** Dr. Benton is a board-certified' psychiatrist in private practice.
