the season.

"We're happy they way we're
playing right now," Byrdsong said.
"I think free throw shooting is ome
thing we can improve upon. A 4-1
start is encouraging. We've faced
some teams that played well against
us, but our defense, have kept us in all
five games we've played."
Tony Tolbert, the Michigan trans

Lady Tartars fast br ak to 7-1 r cord
By HARRY M. ANDERSON Jr.
MlchlgMJ Cltlz.n
Since their home opening loss to
Ashland University 62-60 on a layup
with six seconds left, something has
happened to the Wayne State
Women's basketball squad. And that
something has been for the better.
The Lady Tartars have won seven
straight games since that opening
loss. WSU won their own Tartar
Holiday Tournament defeat Spring
Arbor College (79-61) and Wiscon
sin-Parkside (91-83). The following
week they traveled down to Fort
Wayne, Indiana and won the Indiana
Purdue-Fort Wayne Tournament
defeating the hose IPFW (63-59. and
Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference foe Lake Superior State
(57-44).
But that's not all; the Lady Tartars
downed GLIAC opponent Saginaw
Valley (91-72), Sienna Heights (17-
59) and Northwood (69-49). The
even game winning streak leaves the
Lady Tartars with a 7-1 (1-0 GUAC)
record. Head coach Dianne Wis
newski has nothing but praise for her
team so far this season, but still real
izes that there' two months to do.
"We played well against Wiscon
sin-Parkside in the championship
game," she said. "We came out
rebounding, shooting well from the
floor and the free throw line. Win
ning the tournament at our gym gave
us momentum against IPFW, who
were Undefeated."
"MONIQUE (JOHNSON) and
Julie (FIipus) are providing leader
Ship while Kristin (Wright), Angie
(Davi ) and DeLonda Little are play
ing consistant. The teams we've
played weren't louches. I'm
curiously optimistic about the future
because we till have about 20 games
to go."
The Osborn duo of Monique
Johnson and DeLonda Little have
been a major force in all of WSU's
seven victories. , Johnson scored 15
poin against Spring Arbor and 10
points against WiscoD.iin-Parkside in
the WSU Toruney. Recently against
Northwood Institute Johnson fired in
a game-high 19 points, three assists
and six rebounds.
Little hasn't been left out the pic
ture either. The super sophomore
had 34 points and 22 rebounds
against Wisconsin-Parkside, 24
points and eight rebounds against
Saginaw Valley and 14 points against
Sienna Heights.
"The kids are starting to gel and
that's important because we have
Ferris State this Saturday and Indiana
of Pennsylvania and they're two real
good teams," Wisnewski said. "The
GUAC is going to be tough. It'
going to be a dog fight.·
"The GLIAC rankings which have
us picked to finish eighth out of nine
teams .reflect on what you did last
year. We've beaten two of the con
ference leaders (Saginaw Valley and
Lake Superior). We've finished near
the bottom the last three years, but
3ere hoping to change that."
