Save Highland Park
Community College
Highland Park Community College -the oldest Community
College in the state; the Community College with the most
ill trious hi tory longest list of famous graduat ,educatiolt
provider for t ands yearly.-is facing extinction .
. A pat of bad decisions by the school' Trustees, hard times
financially and John Engler as governor are the force converg
ing to queeze the life out of the College.
It eems omeone in the governor' office has decided that
Wayne County Community College i enough college for
metro-detroit and that Highland Park's chool is irreleva t
unn ssary and re titious.
n . Wrong. - .."
The chool ian treasure
munity determination WI save. first step toward salvation
is voter approval of the millage renewal coming up in January.
Then, the Board of Trustees has to rise to a higher level.
Po itions must be filled based on ability, not blood lines. Job
have to be advertised to get the best person for the job.
The Board should put to the voters the question of dividing
education responsibility. The K-12 system and the College offer
unique Challenges and require two separate boards. Most com
munities across the state have split the two systems and elect
two eparate boards. Highland Park need to follow suit, both
system will benefit.
Finally, the community has to stay focused on the college
and guarantee that the school thrives: A vocal community
present at board meetings, to force the administration to open
their minds and be willing to hear students and community alike,
will restore the school.
The community needs' Highland Park Community College.
But it must be a school that continues the tradition of quality
long established at HPCC. Now, more than ever.

Cone pointed out that Malcolm X
and Martin Luther King, Jr. were not
elitist in their leadership style. Since
their deaths they have been portrayed
to have been messiahs, but in life that
was not the case.
They both knew the importance of
mas movement and organization for
the caus of justice and freedom.
They were not arrogant. Y, , they
were forceful, but not disrespectful or
drunk with egotism.
In other words, everyone h

freedom and justice. Going to the
movie can be educational; but there

In ddition to reading th actual
writings of Malcolm and Martin, we
highly recommend this unique gift in
the form of a book that Jim Cone has
,given to humanity.

Sue s leaving from Muncy was in
