DETROIT-Against the backdrop of
the photo exhibit "Blac Photographers
1840-1940" 24 future photographers
from the Franklin Wright Settlement
were honored as participants in
Kodak's 1992-93 "lnsid the Eastside
Il" program. The program bad laid dor-
mant for 11 years. ,
In 1981, Holly Ewald, an enthusias
tic artist, organized a photography
workshop for a group of young
Detroiters at the Franklin Wright Settle
ment The young people shot images of
their families and community.
"Holly Ewald got me into the pro
gram," said Jacqueline Smith, a 1981
participant "She made sure everything
turned out for us. We would put our
pictures up in beroffice. Tbat'sbowwe
would display them."
The result of the young Detroiters

ELEVEN YEARS lATER, with
mE SPIRlI'UAL and crea
tive power of their talents
transcend the barriers of culture
and time. But the highlight, the
centerpiece, my VCI}' favorite pan
of "Handel 'a Messiah: A Soulful
Celebration" Is the fabulous "Hal
lelujah ClOna."
Maybe you've seen the video
on 'IV, with Quincy Jones leading
an amazing lineup of talent that
includes Johnnie Mathis, Gladys
Knight, Take 6, Chaka Khan,
Stephanie MiUs, Sounds of Black
nell, Jeflrey Osborne, Al Jarreau,
Tramainc Hawkins, Patti Austin,
Joe Sample, Marilyn McCoo,
Edwin Hawkins, Sandra and
Andrae Crouch, Lamclle Harris,
Richard Smallwood, Clifton
Davia, Linda Hopkins, Kim
Fields, actress Vaneaa Williams
and the lite Thomas Whitfield.
Not only are they singing their
hearts out, but they're breathtak
ingly gorp'" and stunningly at
dred, so that you feel you're not
only bearing, but viewing, a living
work of art.
I play the "Hallelujah!"
Chorus constantly. It lifts my
Iplrits, focuses my energy and
IOOtbes my lOul. It is dedicated to
the UlCJOOry of Alex Haley, whose
commitment to write then narra
tive portion of" ... Soulful Celebra
don" inspired the project. .
AND, IN A VERY ignificant
way, it helps me in the work I do.
You see, thanks to the generous
beans of Gail Hamilton and the
folb at Warner, a portion of the
proceed from" A Soulful.
Celebration" are upporting the
Black Community 'Crusade for
Oilldren, which is an initiative of
the Children's Defense Fund.
(More about that in an upcoming
column, I promisef)
So, while I am not entirely ob
jective in recommending thi
wonderful recording to you, I sin
cerely encourage you to enjoy it,
especially in the upcoming
holiday n.
