Black Teens
more in the gift
of giving pirit
Teenagers, especially Black
teens, are volunteering more,
according to a recent survey.
Independent Sector, a non
profit coalition of more than
800 corporate, foundation and
vol untary organization, con
ducted both the recent survey
and a similar one done two
years ago.
The national survey of 1,400
teens found that the percentage
of Black teens increased from
33 percent to 53 percent, more
than any other population seg
ment. Independent Sector's
Virginia Hodgkinson attributes
the rise in part to a "whole
movement among Black chur
ches" to promote youth volun
teerism and "a growth of the
Black middle class."
Groups says Blacks
can'live to be 120
WASHINGTON, D.C.-Anew
age Black anti-aging group says
latest research "clearly shows
that average Black life expec
tancy can easily rise to 120
years if Blacks would adopt
orne simple better life prac-.
tices." The Black Ufe Council
(B.L.C.) is among several
groups studying ways to in
crease life expectancy in
America. However, B.L.C.
focuses its efforts on African
Americans.
Spokesperson Sandra St.
James said, "Overall Black life
expectancy in thi country has
actually declined in recent
years. We must do something
to reverse this. " In order to
