A3WER TO BLACK HISTORY QUESTION UErrl{()rr RT THE I U include buildin , highway , trucks, cars and land c ping, all designed and constructed by Woods. Although Woods ha never had training in land caping or architecture, this 63-year-old poet/artist used throw-away items uch glas , wood, pots, broken dishes, pieces of upholstery and leather to reproduce the frame, groundwork, furniture and cars for the miniature outhem mansion. While creating a center piece for one of the coffee tables, Woods took beads from a woman's necklace and arranged them on a large button taken from an overcoat. If all of this sounds easy, it is not. It takes an experienced artist to arange items such as these and make them look like the real thing. At seven-years-old, Woods modeled cars from mud, shaped the wheels with the lid of a snuffbox and used matches for tire spokes: He would search for the right size of broken glass to make a windshield. -1959 at Detroit, MI. 7th - Thirteen (13). . . 8tb - Approximately 4,500 miles from the Gambia coast to Alula, Somaliland. "One day," he said, "as I sat doodling and sketching little houses on tiny scraps of paper the idea of Plantation House came to me. I started working and througout the years I never got tired. Ever time I thought I was finished another idea would appear in a dream." Planta tion House was first displayed in Troy, Michigan in early August of '83. People came from mile away to see the creation. Woods has had many offers to retire the project and give it a final resting place in the suburbs. But be belives that Planatation House' should remain in Detroit. He also realizes that without community support, he may be forced to consider some of the offers already presented.
