MONTGOM Y, ALA. (AP)
- Officials in Alabama's col
lege desegregation case got
together with legislative
leaders Monday to discuss a
possible settlement, but they
were still as far apart as black
and white.
Officials of predominantiy
white universities urged the
Legislature' Joint Fiscal
Committee to give historically
Black universities no more
than U.S. District Judge
Harold Murphy required in his
ruling a year ago.
But . 'attorneys for
predominantly Black univer
sities and their alumni said the
state must do much more or
they will pursue an appeal .of
Murphy' ruling.

DETROIT - Students at a Detroit
elementary school received recogni
tion for taking special initiative to
help poverty stricken people in the
Detroit area get clothing.
During the last school year, the
student council of Hanneman
Elementary School started a cam-
. paign asking students to give up their
potato chip money and donate it to aid
the hungry in a "Quarters for the
Hungry Campaign."
Money went to the St. Francis
Xavier Church in Ecorse, which aids
many poverty striken Detroiters and
wa used to buy shoes for those who
come in for meal ,according to Han
neman teacher Eva Tate.'

TIES TO AFRICA
"All God's Children Need Traveling Shoes,"
says ,Maya Angelou. Angelou's
journey to Africa brought her joy
and pain as she was constantly
reminded of her American identity
while discovering her African roots.
Her experience spoke to her in
a way that made her ever more
conscious of her African and
American selves.
W.E.B. DuBois
lived in Ghana
where he was
transformed by an
equality he never
felt in his home
country. Ironically,
he died in Africa
as the Civil Rights
Bill he had helped
forge throughout
his life was passed
in America, his life a
metaphor of the
.. i extricable ties between
African and American history.
Malcolm X, too, traveled to
Africa. He was deeply changed
by the simple yet powerful
realization of the onenes
of all peoples.
These prominent
African-Americans all experienced
Africa. They all came away knowing
that part of Africa was now their own,
in whatever way they claimed it.
Visions in Action gives you the opportunity
to hape Africa in your own heart.
An Africa that will always be carried with you.
