Carson paired Positive with
producers Daddy-O and Grand
Puba. The trio collaborated on
the track "Quarter-Gram Pam,"
which got Po itive signed to First
Priority Records.
THIS ASSOCIATION
scored Positive two more under
ground hit singles ("Step Up
Front" and "I'm Not Havin' It," a
duet with MC Lyte) and a number
of ongwriter credits.
But feeling unfulfilled, Posi
tive broke away from First
Priority in 19<-JO. He recorded the
Jeep and radio hit "Grand Puba,
Positive & LG," a cut on Brand
Nubian's One For All, before
hooking up with Big Daddy Kane
to record and co-produce
"N ightshift, " which came out on
his own Creative Control label
(financed with a $15,000 loan by
his mom) and sold over 20,000
units.
After Positive signed with Is
land, one of the many labels that
came calling, "Nightshift" sold
40,000 more copies. .
From his advance and earn
ings, Positive invested in the
studio-office. "I decided to jump
into this music busines thing with
both feet," he says. "I mean, this
is what I want to do for the rest of
. my life, and my. ultimate mission
is to become the next Berry
Gordy."
His next move - creating the
songs for The Skills Dat Pay Da
Bills. Positive may be a dapper
rapper with dreams of even finer
things, but he doesn't make
designer pop. He uses jagged
smooth soundscapes to support
varied rhyme styles that can he
boasts, "even move a manne
quin. "
Positive is just using the skills
God gave him to pay the bills, and
he's holding nothing back. As he
says, "I just want people to hear
me and say, 'That man gave his
all!"

the youngest," Eric laughs. "It's
funny now, because at the time I
was writing songs - only no one
knew it. But when I showed them
to my cousin (George Nash Jr.),
he really encouraged me, and
we've been writing together ever
since." In fact Eric and George
co-wrote five songs on Benet.
The stereo was always on at
the Jordans' house, and the musi
cal mix - Motown, Steely Dan,
Parliament and Funkadelic,
Queen, Manhattan Transfer,
Singers Unlimited, Bobby
Caldwell, Gino Vanelli, Philly
soul, jazz and b ues - was
heavenly. Eric was especially in
fluenced by Stevie Wonder's
danceable rhythms and inspira
tional lyrics and Donny
Hathaway's gospelly dips and
twists. For Lisa, the musical
poems of Roberta Flack were like
snow caps on a mountain. And
while the Jordans thrived on a
musically diverse diet, the family
drew its greatest strength from
the church, where Eric and Lisa
first performed as children in the
choir.
OUT OF HIGH school, Eric
ang with a local group called
Gerard while Lisa devoted long
hours to a band known as Beat
Crazy. They were absorbi ng
mu ic histry, pl ying and li ten-
ing and writing, year by year.
Soon they started performing
together and eventually came to
the attention of EMl's A&R·
department, which saw in "Eric
and Lisa an ability to touch feel
ings and speak in a special musi
cal language. "Our Dad died a
few years ago and we've dedi
cated this project to him," Lisa
says. "I wish he were here to see
what we've accomplished, that
we finished school, which he
stressed above' everything, and
still worked hard at. pursuing our
musical dream."
Ultimately, Eric and Lisa want
to involve themselves in every
phase of the music business, from
recording 'to management to
. publishing. "The goal is to nur
ture, and create," Eric says. "God
has given us a gift, and we feel
Obligated to give something back,
to reach out to people the way
others have helped us.
"Music has such a calming
force in the universe if everyone
coul tap into its power and
beauty, I think the world would
be a much better plac to live."
