Ford Motor can proce d
Y 'I • W H. (AP) - A
Yakima ounty judge has rejected
Ford Motor Co. 's reque t to dismiss
a 3-year-old reverse discrimination
law uit filed by a former auto
dealer.
Superior Court Judge Stephen
Brown's Thu day deci ion et the
tage for either a trial or a ettlc
ment.
Denton Morrow of Sunnyside al
leges that Ford blocked him from
elling hi financially ailing Sun
ny ide Ford dealership to a white
California auto dealer.named Klaus
Mareld in 1988. .
Ford wanted Morrow to sell to a
Black buyer to boo t the number of
minority-owned dealerships, Mor
row contends.
.,
• • TH REAL reason why the
propo cd ale was rejected,"
Morrow's law uit said, • 'was be
cau e (Ford) had adopted a policy
that there would be a certain number
of dealer 'hip in the United States
that would be granted to Blacks."
Ford denies the allegation.
, 'Race was not a factor in this
busine .': pokesman Tom Foote
aid recently. "There was no dis
crimination involved in this case."
M reld's pa t sale performance
didn't meet Ford's requirements,
Harold Stamblor, a Seattle attorney
for Ford, told the court Thursday.
Morrow al 0 failed to complete
necessary paperwork for the sale,
Stamblor said.
Stamblor said Morrow' also
made li ttle effort to find another
buyer atter Mareld was rejected.
Morrow, denied financing by Ford
to keep his dealership afloat, sold
the business back to the company in
'1988.
Morrow contend he would have
made $300,000 on the sale to
Mareld, but that the sale to Ford left
him with nothing except debts.
He is seeki ng damages to be
determined at trial.

as sales contract between the par

In reque ting di mi al, Ford
contended that Morrow cannot
legally bring a reverse discrimina
