coming Black Muslim leader
Loui Farrakhan and hi Nation of
Islam followers to the convention
next weekend. Both said the letters
were mailed routinely by their taff
without their knowledge and con-

Friday.
Jackson, instead, sent Farrak­
han a letter asking him to denounce
anti-Semitism when he appears in
Atlanta next wee end.
The action came fter Stuart
Lewengrub, director of the B'nai
B'rith' Southeast regional office,
. complained that the political
leaders were ending the wrong
message by welcomi ng the
nationalistic ect, whose leaders
have been critical of Judaism.

Jackson said Friday he had writ­
ten Farrakhan eeking the denun­
ciation of anti-semitism during hi
Atlanta appearance. The mayor
sent copies to B'nai B'rith and
asked that the two ides meet for
peace talks.
" Atlanta would be the mo t ap­
propriate place for that to occur,"
Jackson said in a statement.
In the letter, he said, "The many
anti-drug, self-help, self-reliance,
economic development and other
positive programs of the Nation of
I lam unfortunately are over­
shadowed by the discord between
the Almighty's various children."
The American Jewish Commit­
tee earlier this week failed to keep
an appointment with local repre­
sentatives of the Nation of Islam.
Sherry Frank, area director of the
committee, said she did not attend
the meeting after her colleagues
