"We m t tum other
not on h other."
- Rev. Je e L. Jack on
The recent incident on
Detroit' ide which ended
with the demise 0 1 Dent,
an African American mal , t the
hands of an Arab American mer
chant, unfortuna ly i ano r
d chap r in the plight 00
economic ta of affai aoo in
the inner city community
African Americans comprise
more than venty percent of the
Detroi t population, yet we con
tinuc' to depeod on any aoo every
one but sorreore that 100 like
us to provide our food, clothing
and lter!
Let me make it perfectly
clear, that we do not propose that
we hould never pend our
money with non-African
Am nears: however, the time
has com to insure that the dollar
in the inner city community cir
culates at least four or five times.
The time has come to under
starx1 that the African American
community is economically
under seige and placed in a state
of war, economically speaking,
by outside forces.
Yet, the majority of us are in
need of a wake up call to this
reality, i.e., the closing of auto
plants, manufacturing plants,
department tores in the inner
city neighborhoods, and the fact
that the majority of the merchants
in the community do not live in
the conununity.
It is now time to go to "war"
.econormcally to save us for usl
Once you save yourself, you can
help others! Remember,"
charity begins at home, then
spreads abroad."
If charity begirs at borne, then
surely economic survival should
start at borrel That is common
serse that each and every other
non-African American com- .
munity practices and remember,
that after enslavement in the
west, freedom from the chairs
was not easy the freedbm to vote,
and the freedom to use public
conveniences wen: hard fought
battles; and, the struggle for
economic independence will
also be won only after we fight to_
overcome centuries of mental
slavery that motivates us to com
mit economic suicide!
Economic suicide is when
you do not go into business in
your community! Go into busi
ness.
Economic suicide is when
you shop outside your com
munityl Shop in your com
munity. F1ISt with someone woo
has reasonable prices, good mer
chandise, a clear facility, treats
you with respect as a member of
the human family, and the first
preference should go to someone
who looks like you (shop in
Detroit - inside of Eight Mile
Road I)
It's an insult wren a com
munity of more than one million
people has no major sbopping
malls or major department stores
inside' of borders. The time has
come for this community to join
together and create it's own
stores, malls, and sboppingstrips,
etc. When major chains can lo
cate in communities with
250,CXX> poople or less, but not .
one within a community of more
than one million we should con
sider selecting not to spend
money with tbose chains and/or
stores! Practice selective
buying!
Work together for economic
freedom! Peace!
