Nicotine Skin Patches Help Smokers Quit
Until recently nicotine gum was the only method of nicotine replace
ment therapy approved in the United States. Nicotine gum ha been
helpful in smoking cessation f many individuals. However, many
people quit chewing the gum prematurely, or they do not u e the correct
chewing technique.
Much of the interest in the nicotine kin patch, follow recent finding
by various research group . According to a recent i u of American Family
Physician, the results of 10 different tudies are encouraging. In nine of
the tudies a nicotine skin patch was more effective than a pi cebo (blank)
patch in helping people quit moking. In all ten tudie the rate at which
people were able to stop moking was approximately twice the rate for
smokers who received the placebo. The amount of nicotine delivered was
roughly one-half of the amount normally obtained from cigarette moke,
Nicotine skin patches available now or scheduled to come out oon
include Habitrol™, Pro tepTM, Nicoderm™, and Nicotrol-16™. The
patche are applied to a dry, non-hairy part of the body, uch a the stomach
or upper ann. They deliver nicotine continuou ly over a 24 hour' period.
Nicotine patche hould not be worn by women who are pregnant, unle
directed Ito do so by their phy ician .
