bers will perform more than 40 ex­
periments, including one on bone

Although she was born in
Decatur, AL., she spent her early
years in Chicago, which she calls
home. She holds a B.S. in chemical
engineering from Stanford and an
M.D. from Cornell University Medi­
cal School.
The builder on Woodcliff Vil­
lage, Cinda Corporation of Detroit,
is also an African American com­
pany.
It is tbe control of the project by

"We're changing the econom­
ics," said Kelly.
"Blacks don't have to turn to
white suppliers or builders and it
shakes up the good old boys," Kelly
said. "Roadblocks keep getting put
in our way, but we keep pushing
them aside."
He added that Heights residents
are being trained in the process as
they work on the homes.
Delays that have plagued the pro­
ject for the last six months seem near

concern that the rezoning proposal
was too broad, designating land on
Woodward and Richton, rather than
the specific property that Edison

Mahoney emphasized that
Edi on had no desire to rezone any
mo land.
The City Council, with the ap­
proval of Mayor Linsey Porter
agreed to changes to limit the rezon­
ing proposal the way the residents
suggested.
Councilman Frank Ross praised
the residents for coming down and
expressed the hope that this would
serve as "a precedent" to get other
communities involved.
"This is your neighborhood. This
is your area, II he said. "You ought to
have input. Nothing should be done
without the citizens."

urged the residents to stay involved
in the process and come to the coun­
cil after the Planning Department
gave its report.
"If you go away and don't act, you
will be short changed," she said.
"Not by me or the other council

and that a deputy grabbed him by the
neck and slammed his head into a
trailer without provocation. Clarke

deputies that Brown was on dialysis.
Brown aid he was slammed to the
ground, thrown against a cruiser and
hit in the leg with a club.
Clarke was charged with resisting
arrest and disorderly conduct. Brown
