The provocative vior 0 the
Republican candida , their overt

explained part 0 the general
breakdown of our political tem.
The udden emergence ofRo Perot

even Bill Clinton's election of

Tennessee Senator AI Gore, .

ARE WE STILL'SUFFERING FROM A NEGATIVE. SELF IMAGE?
By -lAMe ALS8ROOK
Why do I feel uncomfortable if I
go downstain in the morning
without making up my bed? Why do
I make up my bed even in a botel
with maid service? Why must some
people try to set.things "j\8t so"
before going 10 another task?
In my case, the answer 1iea in
respomea made many years ago to a
three-word phrlse my paren used.
The words in this pregnant phrase
ere, "Ready For Breakfast"
Computer users ould call my
r,esponse to this phrase
"programmed." P ychologists
would ay my response sho ed
"acculturation," and sociologi Is
would call it "socialization." I call it,
"learned behavior" or
habit-formation.
The old folks ould say the value
of thi respoase is that, "if you bend
a tree into a certain shape when it is
YOUDg and flexible, that tIee will
retain that shape throughout its life."

AT OUR BOUSE, my mother or
grandmother ould open the doors
to the bedrooms in which we three
brothers slept and let the delicious
aroma of ham, eggs, cereal and fruit
float into our bedrooms and tease our
nostrils for a few minutes. Then she
would c&l1 aloud with a cherry
"Good morning, boys· and ask
whether we were "READY FOR
BREAKFAST."
Knowing that we adive, growing
·and hunlry boys were always
food-hippy, they already kDew the
answer. They knew that hem we
smelled the food would speedily
eliminate aU barriers between us and
the breakfast table. '
The barriers bad been discussed
ever since we were old enough to
understaDd tbem. They were posted
iiteacb bedroom:
- Get out of bed, throw the
COval back and let the bed have air.
- UDl the cather' too bad,
open windo IDd "air out" your
room.
- Take your turn and go to the
bathroom to "take care of your
needs." This 1nc1uded bing your
bands, face neck and em, brushing
your teeth, combing and brushing
your hair and making yourself
"generally presentable."
- Leave the bathroom soon
possible to let your brothelS use it
- Return to your room, baD&
pajamas in clot and put house
shoes beneath them, mate up your
"aired· bed, get dressed, straightcD
up room quictly IDd hen rudy for'
inspection, call, "I'm readyl" Then
mother or grandmother ould enter,
look around the room and either tell
you to mate cbanges or say, "You're
ready."

BEFORE LONG WE three boys
were dept t mating our bedrooms
"ready" and e ould go from bed

by usinl the half-bath in the

When the adults accepted 0
behavior, e would get a call for lee
