Gospel Explo ion held July 16-18
in Na hville, Tenne ee W

insiders. The event, which keyed
in on gospel' youth movement,
spotlighted upwards of 50 youth
groups, with participants young
as three years old.
Standing-room only audiences
packed the Tennessee Performing
Arts Center to witne the amazing
excitement of youth in gospel.
More than 5,000 turned out. Held
twice yearly, the Gospel Explosion
features nightly musicals and
seminars reflective of the latest
trends in gospel as well as i uesof
Importance to Blacks in the gospel
music industry.
Among those gospel
performers on hand were Sandra
Crouch, Daryl Colex. Richard
Smallwood, O'Landa Draper, �ar
On Sin, Fairfield Four, and John P.
Ket.

Original and founding mem
bers Michael Reid (piano, key
boards), Philip Thomas (lead
vocals, drums, percussion),
Robert Nawah Smith' (baritone
lead) and Therlow A. Foy Jr. (1st
tenor lead) started the group 15
years ago while in high school in
Baltimore, Maryland. Rounding
out the group are Corey Brooks
(piano, keyboards), Chauncey
Badgett (drums, percussion),
Rowen Chapman (bass guitar),
and William (Smitty) Smith
(tenor lead).
After COllege, the group per
formed across the country at state
fairs, talent shows, conventions,
gospel revivals and as opening
acts on concert tours. They were
then booked on a local television
show called "Spread A Little
Sunshine." By popular demand;
they were called back so often
that they soon became regulars
on the show.
They were seen by other
gospel acts and producers, and
were called upon to do studio
work and provide background
vocals for acts like Sandi Patti,
The Hawkins Sing and Tecmy
Huffam and the Gems. Abun
dant Life performed background
vocals on Teddy Huffam's Dove
Award (gospel's equivalent to a
Grammy) winning album In
credible.
