Mayor Stephen GOldsmith, aid he
will review her statements before he
ys anything about her appearance.
"It may very well be th case
that I end up with some tatement
where I disagree with the content of
some of the folks who have been
invited by Black Expo, but at the
arne time I don't view it the city'
right or role to referee the invitees,"
Goldsmith said at a news conference
with Black Expo officials.
THE REV. CHARLE Wil­
liams, president of the Indianapolis­
based tatewide organization that
promotes' African American heri­
tage and culture, said Sister Souljah
was invited to the summer celebra­
tion before the controversy devel­
oped.
"This organization does not con­
done anyone threatening the life of
anyone," Williams said.
Black Expo's events at the Indi­
ana Convention Center will also in­
clude filmmaker Mario Van Peebles
and singer Dionne Warwick, The
theme of the summer celebration is
"Screen Images Shaping America."
The Miss Black America Pageant
will also occur during Black Expo.
It was at last year' pageant that
Tyson, the former heavyweight box­
ing champion, met contestant De­
siree Washington of Coventry, R.I.
Tyson was convicted of raping her
and is serving a Six-year prison sen­
tence.
"WE DO NOT see the incident
relating to the event," Williams said.
"At 1:30 in the morning, whatever
happened that day, has no relation­
ship Expo is closed down. What two
people do is between two people."
Black Expo recently settled a
lawsuit with pageant organizer J.
Morris Anderson in which it agreed
to continue hosting the pageant.
Black Expo will provide chaperones
for the 60 contes tants.
"We offered it to them, and we
want to ensure that the guests in our
city are protected and that they fol­
low the rules and guidelines of the
event," Williams aid.
Not all signs of discrimination
are this obvious.
