RENT-A-WRECK began
franchi ing in 197B, and cur
rently has more than 450 loca
tions world wide. A franchise
i the right, or license. granted
to market a company' goodsor
services in an assigned ter-,
ritory. After the initial invest
ment, kept low by the special
Rent-A- Wreck minority
ownership program, the
African-American franchise
stands to net over S30,<XXl in
first-year profits.
Once in business, the
company's rental C8IS cost $20
for a 24-hoiar day with a three
day minimum. Where Rent-A
Wreck beats the Big Name car
rental companies for inner-City
clients is, a customer doesn't
have a credit card. They simply
pay the fee in advance and
leave a $150 refundable
deposit.
Most Rent-A-Wreck cus
tomers come from the
franchisee's neighborhood and
rent because th family car. is
down, or in the shop for a week
or so.
Small trucks are popular
with Saturday home movers. If
Rent-A-Wreck's cars break
down, the company offers 24-
hour towing services and re
placement vehicles.
Rent-A- Wreck will finance 75
percent of
he 10,<XXl fee. They will
also finance the purchase of
starter vehicles for the
franchisee. The average car
yields $400 per month and is
"in service" 80 percent of the
time.
Accorning to company Vice
President, Henry Gross, the
company "has had good sue
cess with the mino3ity market."
A PUBUCL Y traded com
pany, NASDAQ: RAWA,
RENT-A- WRECK was named
by Surm&s magazine as one of
the best franchise opportunities
in the U.S. for three consecu
tive years 1990, 1991 and 1992.
Entrepreneur rna g a z i ne
named the company the num
ber one franchisor in the used
car rental indtry.
In contrast to the
"colorblindness" that we get
from the government nd Cor
porate America, RENT -A
WRECK makes no bones
about its "affirmativ action"
toward getting Blacks into
business. .
