Apart from being Inferior In

with poverty. Without enough
money to buy adequate quantities of
powder, and without enough educa

clean water or terilizing equipment,
fridges or fuel, the milk powder is
often mixed with contaminated
water nd fed to b bies from un-

As a result, bottle-fed b bies in
poor communities have been found
to be approximately 15 times more
likely to die from diarrhoeal disc e
and 4 times more likely to die from
pneumonia than babies who are ex

Many women In the developing
world do not give birth in hospitals,
the report acknowledges. And even
those who do enter maternity uilits
usually stay for only one or two days.
So the worldwide..campaign to make
hospitals more baby-friendly, say
UNICEF, is only one step among the
many needed in the journey baclc
towards breastfeeding.
