WLBT in Jackson and wrOK in
Merridian, Mis i ippi, Young said.
As impressive as the Ministry at­
mo phere is, the living testimony
tha t said the mo t was that of Jim
Greer.
Greer worked in the Illinois state
prison system for 31 years. Nine of

The outreach was founded in
1976 and it is upon the principle the
ministry was founded upon and
operates under, that Reverend
Weeden said the Lord directed him
to bring to Detroit.
The Living Light Outreach Mini­
stries in Chicago has a chapel, a one­
year Christian-orientated drug and
alcohol recovery house that has . a
32-bed capacity, a food pantry and
daily meals for the less fortunate.
Each Sunday, the ministry serves
a family-style dinner after devotion­
al services.
The one year recovery program
teaches vocational training which
translates into refuIbishing houses
and apartments the ministry then
rents out or uses to house its business
ventures.
AT THE PRESENT there is an
outreach secondhand store and plans
for a car wash and fruit stand.
Because of the ministry's inde­
pendence, Reverend Weeden is able
to say, "We don't accept grants from
any facet of govemment-city, state
or federal-and anyone who is
receiving welfare must remove
themselves from the rolls before they
can enter the recovery program."
When he spoke at Corinthian
Baptist Church one month ago,
Reverend Weeden said, "Stevie
Wonder, Isiah Thomas, 'Arethea
Franklin (and other personalities and
non personalities) have to put some­
thing back into this communi ty. "
Reverend Weeden has been a fre­
quent visitor to this city within the
past three months and expects to
begin his ministry work here soon.
He said he has applied for the
proper license.
City Council member Gil Hill
was so impressed with Reverend
Weeden and what he proposes to do
in Detroit that he sent representatives
from his staff to Chicago to see first
hand what the ministry had ac­
complished. . _
COUNCIL MEMBER Hill said,
"I don't see why many of the things
he has accomplished in Chicago
can't be accomplished here."
In addition, the council member
said, "This person (Reverend
Weeden) i not reaching out for
handouts."
The ministry accepts donations
but it also pays its way too.
"It's time to come together,"
Reverend Weeden said. "It's time to
create jobs. You got to put the money
back into the community."

Reverend Weeden wants to generate
the elf-help concept here that he put
together in Chicago.
"Within the church there are ar­
chitects, plumbers, carpenters, brick
masons, electrician and other
