Therefore, I am oa a mis ion to
ex. rminate the problem with a cure.
There are chemical compounds
found that can reverse the ickling
proce . However, they have harm
ful: side effects. I will play in the
development of Black history,
gi t. ng new hope for longer life to
ickle-eell patients. I am the first
Black, female hematologist to dis
cover a new and effective treatment
and cure for the sickle cell anemia'
disease.
OW I MUST educate! The
ed· lion of my people, in regards to
a sease such as sickle-cell, is much
needed today. There are so many
p\e in this world with little or no
edllcation. It is never too late to start
a aew beginning. We need more
positive, Black role models, like
m)lself, to put their creative energies
aulO talent to work in order to produce
mere intelligent, Black leaders in
these changing times.

New techniq and technologies of
the world today will go down in hi -

I can make a significant dif

choices for my life tod y.
First of all, I w nt to ve posi-

can lk to th 0 my friends who
ve fallen victims of teen pregnan
cy. They need to know t life does
not end with the birth of that child.
Encouraging them to tay in chool
and educate themselves to be th best
mothers, future wiv , and profes
sional women that they can be is very
impol1an.
I would like to be a big . ter to
the young girl growing up in tbe dys
functional family, to prevent such an
event from reoccurring. As a mem
ber of the Roeper Speakers Bureau,
I will educate Detroit area elemen
tary school tudents on how to chal
lenge themselves. My de ire i to
see them grow up as cientists, en
gineers and doctors - not thieves,
murderers.and drug dealers.
MOREOVER, I HAVE chosen
to further my education by going to
college. This will give me an oppor
tunity to acquire the additional
knowledge that I will need to prepare
myself for the future. In doing so, I
hope that omeone will look at me
and say, "if she can do it, so can 1."
This 1 will do, not only to en
. courage others, but to prove to
myself that my labor in high school
has not been in vain.
Furthermore, while in college; I
want to learn more about babies born
wi th the AIDS virus and those that
are born addicted to cocaine. After I

have started my career, in my spare
time, I would like to volunteer at a
center or hospital that cares for af
flicted children. Statistically, mo t
these children are Black; therefore, I
feel that I should give omething
. back to the community.
Thi can be done not..only through
the child care of the infants, but by
Intervening with programs designed
to help stop the steady rise in the
percentage of motberwbo use drugs
during pregnancy. Maybe one day,
while researching the incidence of
syphilis in cocaine-addicted babies,
I will discover a cure for the AIDS
virus.
In conclusion, the decisions I
make today will affect tomorrow.
There are many ways that I feel I can
make an impact on Black hi tory.
Impacting Black history involve not
only taking time to share what you
have with other, but it involves
making a difference. After all,
making Black history is making a
difference, isn't it?
