dent has taken on the role of leading
a local coalition to comply with
education standards set nationally
by President George Bush.
, Under "America 2,000," Bush
established six goals to be reached
by all states to assure a quality
education for each American stu
dent.
Detroit is the first Michigan dis
trict and the first large urban district
in the country to join the national
effort, Patrick said.
In,l990, Bush convened a bipar
tisan National Education Summit
composed of suite governors and
tbey carne up with new standards
for educating school children in
cluding, all children will start
school ready to learn, the high
school graduation rate will increase
to 90 percent, students will leave
grades four, eight and twelve
demonstrating competency in
English, mathematics, science, his
tory, and geography.
EVERY SCHOOL will ensure
that all tudents learn to use their
mind well, 'preparing tbem for
responsible citizenship, further
learning and productive employ
ment in modern. economy, and
United States students will be first
in the world in cience and maihe-
maties achievements. 'Every adult
will" be literate and will possess
knowledge and skills necessary to
compete in a globally, and exercise
the rights and responsibilities of

The present resolution follows
the previously adopted 1989 "Dec
laration of Reform," the 1990
"Detroit Quality Education Plan,"
and the "1991 "Design For Ecel
lence," Patrick said.
The Detroit coalition, however,
is non-partisan made up of educ
tional, civic, religious, business,
politicl, and community leaders.
