Department of Housing and Urban Development to build 25 new scattered-site houses in the city. Funding for the plan would be $2 million. ' Danethel Whitfield, Executive Director of the Benton Harbor Hous ing Commission, said a design selec tion committee would consist of people from the Housing Cornrnis- ion, representatives from the City of Benton Harbor Commission and city residents. She said the committee would meet and select an' architect and come up with the best design for the houses. Whi tfield said sites for the homes will be purchased from the City, as was the ites for the other canered site homes. The city has over 300 vacant properties to choo e from. that w n't there before," Yarbrough aid. " Commf ioner Norval Weiss aid there hould be much pre sure as po ible put on the committee to get a design for the homes that will be accepted by the general public as well. Whitfield said the people that apply for the homes must be self-suf ficient. They must be enrolled in chool or a job training program and after training must seek employment to get them off the welfare rolls. Ap plicants must become elf-sufficient within a five-year period to own a home. COMMISSIONER George Wysinger s id if these houses be like the other scattered- lte homes the Housing Commi ion had previous built, be would not support them. "I know some dog houses that were built better than the last homes. 1 think they were a disgrace to the City of Benton Harbor." "I support any home-ownership in the city, but I think the rental thing is what got, our ci ty tom apart al ready," Wysinger said. "The homes that were put up are a whole lot better than what w there before," Commissioner Char les Yarbrough said, of the scattered site houses.
