The bad new about penicillin allergy i that it can be life thre tening,
In a per on with an allergy to penicillin, a ingle do of the antibiotic can
produce anaphylactic hoc . Thi is a vere re ction which may involve
itching, hive ,breathing problem ,and collap of the circulatory y tem.
Without immediate medical intervention, death may re ult. Because of the
everity of penicillin reaction in ome individuals, few phy icians use
thi antibiotic in person with a hi tory of penicillin allergy.
There i ome good news about penicillin allergy. According to a
recent tudy publi hed in British Medical Journal, only a mall percentage
of people with a reported history of penicillin allergy are clinically at ri
ofhavingaseriou re ction. One hundred thirty-two person withahi tory
of penicillin allergy were referred to and evaluated by phy ician in an
outpatient allergy clinic. All were te ted for the presence of penicillin ·
antibodie . Only 4 person out of the entire group had penicillin- pecific
antibodie in the' blood. The remaining. 128 persons were given oral
penicillin with no ill effects.
Re earcher ugge ted that people who think they are allergic to :
penicillin may need to be tested for the pre ence of penicillin antibodie . :
If test result are negative, this is conclu ive that they are not allergic to
penicillin.
