cently beld a public bearing in De­
troit to hear t timony regarding tbe

and Work-formerly part of the Michi­
gan Department of Labor.
Sixteen people, men and women,
testified about the variou function
of the office. It wa the olde t office
in the country that dealt exclusively
with the concern of working women.
Funds to run the Office of Women
and Work were cut by Gov. John
Engler in October.

tant for the Michigan Department of
Labor to have a staff member who is
responsive to women's i ues, be­
cause not having one create the po­
tential for women to "fall tbrough the
cracks."
"We administer most of the work­
related laws tbat are not discrimina­
tion-oriented - wages, fringe ben­
efits, worker's compensation - so
it's important to have someone on
staff who can approach these laws
from a race or gender perspective."

complaint were filed. During that
same year, an additional 93 com­
plaint were filed regarding unfair
treatment due to pregnancy and 80
regarding sexual harassment.
Yet de pite these statistics, Hom
said that Michigan is a national leader
in the field of civil rights legislation.
