JANICE HA" 0 doubt
that her efforts- will payoff, that
eventually she will become a
nurse. She wants to h Ip pe pie,
especially children.
Meanwhile, Janice has
remained a tive in th WA VE
organization. She repro serncd her
home tate of Louis i na at
WAVE' national confcren e,
and was elected a member 'of its
four-person National Leadership
Team. That mears Janice will
erve two years as a national
pokesperson for W AYE. I wish
everyone could hear her message.
Whenever Janice has an op
portunity, sbe tells youth and
adults alike about her educational
experience. She emphasizes row
vital schooling is to uccess, and
that it's never too late to "hit
books." Janice believes people
often just need a little pish, a little
motivation, and she knows from
experience that anyone can learn.
"You can achieve any goal if
you work hard," she says. "You
have to reach within because
motivation is within yourself.
Sometimes people need help to
bring it out. Someone believed in
me."
Because omeonc believed in
Janice, and more importantly, be
cause Janice believed in herself
and did not let premature preg
nancy and parenthood staIX1 in
her way, her baby daughter, Jas
min, stands to have a decent fu
ture as well.
THE LESSONS Janice
leamed will be passed on to Jas
min. Namely, to never give up,
and that our goals are always
within reach iI we work hard
enough to achieve them. While
it' a lot harder if you have a baby
. too 0011, Janice's personal suc
" cess is a needed reminder to us
that all young people can tum
themselves around and get back
on track.

Michigan' Department of
Tran portation, Anton De Kok wa
the gu t peaker,
Kok's topic was the Davi on
Freeway, specifically Highland
Park' tretch which lie between
Oakland Avenue and the Lodge
Freeway.
Kok aid work on the freeway
will begin in late '92 or early '93
and it will take approximately five
years to complete the SO million
project.
He added that the new freeway
will have four 12- oot lanes going
e t and we t and the service road
will remain where they are.
At the pre ent time the county
owns the freeway but after the con
truction i complete, the tate will
take over; Kok said. It ha already
been named MS,' -
A 'mall crowd attended
Thursday' luncheon, but there was
plenty of excitement over Kok'
declaration that the new freeway
will have an eastbound Woodward
Avenue exit but no west bound exit.
Moreover, during the con true
tion stage, both brdge at Second
V
I
and Third Av nue will b clo d
but he did n t pell out the length of
time.
On the other hand, Kok
diagrammed how th construction,
to begin on th north ide of th
freeway, will not impede the flow
of traffic.
Because much concern wa ex
pre ed over the exit ramp at
Woodward Avenue, Kok aid
everything i. in the planning tage ,
which ugge t that time' for citizen
input exi t .
According to the plan he
pre ented la t week, the eastbound
Third Avenue exit will be moved UP
to exit at Woodward Avenue and
the westbound exit at Oakland
Avenue will remain as i .
The plan al 0 include a we t .
bound entrance ramp that will feed
off of Woodward Avenue.
Kok did not have any concrete'
information about what Highland
Park can expect concerning Hamil
ton Avenue but he did ay the
Lodge Freeway entrance will
remain the 'arne.
