Crawford was born with what
she said is a "hereditary birth

WHILE UNDERGOING

"Nothing will tum a head like a
solid groove," relates Rahni Song,
. founder/producer/director of Ben
son recording artist Kingdom. But
Kingdom goes a step further and
grounds its very solid groove in the
bedrock of the Gospel.
Kingdom was born out of the ex
perience and vision of Rahni Song,
whose musical career took root in the
early 70's. "My uncle asked me
record with two Gospel groups he
had," recalls Rabniof the experience
that influenced his life's direction.
"From that point I sensed that music
would be my future."
With extensive experience and
knowledge in the field of church
music, Rahni sought further musical
education outside the fold in secular
bands. "Being in bands was some
what taboo for members of my fami
ly and church at that time," .he
explains. "Many people feared that
this time I bad gone too' far. But I
saw it as sort of going to college.
1bere was not a lot of technology
available yet in gospel music. Play
ing in bands was an education for
me.""
This musical path led him to writ
ing and arranging. and to producing,
one of his greatest loves. His
production credits include jazz
saxophoni t Najee's 1988 album,
Najee' Theme, which received a
Soul Train Award for Be t Jazz
Album, as well a a Grammy
nomination for Jazz Album of the
Year. He also produced albums
for David Ruffin and Melba Moore,
MAINSTREAM SUCCESS
served to birth the vision of the group
Kingdom: "that there is a greater
work to be done in secular music." .
Amazing, the group's first release,
was a success and served to solidify
their music and mission.
Kingdom's debut Benson release,
Serious, marks a first for the group
and for the gospel industry. It is the
first nationally-distributed release
for the New England-based group
and the first gospel urban R&B
album of its quality and authenticity.
With Gospel music's hottest R&B
sound, easily comparable to any
state-of-the-art urban pop recording,
Kingdom is eeing many heads tum
in its direction. Kingdom is after
more than the listening ear. of its
audience, however. Rahni Song and
each of the 15 Kingdom members
are using the musical vernacular of
.their llsteners-c-aggresstve, treet-.
wise R&B - to reach the hearts of
their listeners with the message of.
salvation.
With its hard-hitting musical
tyle, unheard of in go pel mlBic
circles, Kingdom has experienced its
share of controversy. Butthey ex
plain, "Kingdom's mission is to go o
the street and reach people who Will
not look in the church. We want to
tum their heads to the Lord."
