Community hould

Editor,
Jbere' omething wrong wi th
African Amerians in our community.
You have a white mayor of a
predominantly Black town, an inter
esting paradox, dismi s an entire
generation of African descent as
"lost" and only a few brave soul in
the community takes offense at the
comment.
Have we become 0 filled with
If-hate, that we will let a member.
of a race, with a proven track record
of meaning no good, berate our
youth we tand by and let it hap
pen?
Where' the public outcry
demanding Bill Wolf apologize for
his racist and -very dangerous com
ment? Or do the older African
Americans .in Benton Harbor truly
. believe that the future of our People
are "lost"?
Mayor Wolf i the only mayor in
the entire country to dismi an entire
generation of young African
Americans.
THE MAYORS of Chicago and
Detroit have much larger problems
. than we have, but Richard Daley and
Coleman Young never gave up on an
entire generation of Black people.
I'm a 33-year-old African
American father of four and I refuse
to accept the fact that they're lost
because a white man doesn't know
how to relate or understand them.
I raise them to be aware of their
proud history a people. I tell them
about Africans, before the birth of

Christ, m tering medicine, astrol- . :
ogy, th arts, and civilization. '

from Hannibal to Nate Turner to
Loui Farrakhan. .
I tell them that years of being tom
away from the land of their ,
forefathers, the de truction of the
African family during slavery, the'
los of our culture and religion, cen- .
turie of institutional racism, and .
more importantly, being forced to .
recogrw:c the Son of God white

people.
THE LACK OF job oppor • .':
tunities, ignorance, elf·hate, aoo tbe
deliberate dumping of crack cocaine 'IIJ
in our community haS led some of
.
our young people down the wrong
path, but that doe n't mean they're
"lost"; just imply misled and
neglected.
They were abandoned by the cur- I
rent ,generation of Black leadership ';
who became complacent when they'. "
became integrated and "accepted" by . t
white society. 1 -
They moved out of their neigh- .
borhoods leaving a void of leader- "
ship and role models fOJ the current-

youth. .
. As economic opportunities ,
opened up a generation ago, they 1
took their money and spent it in other, •
neighborhoods and stopped
patronizing Black businesses.
They took their children out of .. '
schools they attended in their youth ..
and placed them in other school di - , .
tricts hoping they would be better, to
but instead their children were ig· I,:
nored culturally and educationally. . I
So, Mr. Mayor, if you're strug- ..
gling with a generation of "lost"
young African Americans, you -
should place the blame on boulders oJ
of your bon-sighted, selfish sup
porters and the basic contempt your
race has for African Americans in"
this society.
