MAN\ WHO LIVE in the
Southwest neighborhood are ap
palled and perplexed. Jerry Collins,
a Rathbone Street resident for 46
years, and others like her, are angry.
"It's the city's fault that he
(Almas Realty) hasn't paid his
taxes," Collins said. "Why doesn't
the city do something?"
Collins said that if she was delin
quent in her property taxes, the city
would set her belongings out on the

Osteoporosis: Special Problem for Women,
Osteoporosis is the most common disease of the bone seen by physi
cians. An estimated 24 million Americans are affected by this condition.
Although men can develop osteoporosis, it is a special problem for
women. According to a recent article in The Journal ofF amily Practice,
about one-half of all women over the age of 45 and ninety percent of all
women over the age of 75 have osteoporosis.
Which women seem to be at greatest risk? The highest risk group
includes women who are white or Asian, of low body weight, have small
bone structure, and have a family history of the disease. Other risk factors
include cigarette smoking, heavy alcohol use, low dietacy intake of
calcium, and a sedentary lifestyle.
What treatment options are available for at-risk women? Estrogen is
the only prescription medicine approved by e U.S. Food and Drug
Admininstration for prevetuion of osteoporosis. For women who already
have the condition, many treatment options are available. Health experts
now recommend 1,500 mg of calcium daily for postmenopausal women.
Calcium, sodium floride and vitamin D have been shown to strengthen
bone. Parathyroid hormone also has proven to be effective in treating os
teoporosis.
